Grand Theft Auto 6 will escalate high-heat police pursuits by deploying K9 units to track and apprehend players attempting to escape on foot. The mechanic was detailed through an unscripted gameplay demonstration featured in Edge Magazine Issue 430 (via GamesRadar+), showcasing how canine units alter encounters with law enforcement.

In the demonstration conducted by Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson, protagonists Jason and Lucia attempted to flee law enforcement on a motorcycle following a robbery. During the nighttime getaway, the bike struck low-visibility spike strips deployed across the road, puncturing the tires and throwing the pair. As Jason tried to limp away from the wrecked motorcycle, a police Alsatian caught up and pinned him to the ground.

The confrontation forced an immediate decision: players can either eliminate the dog or let it hold them. Firing upon police animals carries lasting consequences, triggering a severe negative penalty against the player's Criminal Profile. The system expands upon the tracking hounds previously seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, where lawmen and bounty hunters used dogs to follow Arthur Morgan across rough terrain.

Once a pursuit reaches high wanted levels, escaping the police will demand stricter awareness of surroundings. While players can break line of sight or swap clothing stored in vehicle trunks to shake off standard search perimeters, police dogs add an aggressive physical threat designed to punish failed getaways and disable suspects before they reach cover.
