GTA 6 Reportedly Replaces Tap-to-Sprint With Left Stick Click
GTA 6 may retire the franchise's traditional tap-to-sprint mechanic in favor of a left-stick click, freeing up camera control during movement.

Grand Theft Auto 6 may finally abandon the series' long-standing tap-to-sprint mechanic in favor of modern standard controls, according to recent preview reports.
Since Grand Theft Auto III, moving at maximum foot speed has required players to rapidly mash the X button on PlayStation or the A button on Xbox. However, impressions emerging from preview events at Rockstar North indicate that GTA 6 maps sprinting to an analogue stick click—L3 on PlayStation 5 and the left stick on Xbox Series X|S.
Italian creator MikeShowSha, who attended a hands-off presentation, reported that the left-stick input acts as the new default sprint method. The shift would allow players to keep their right thumb on the camera stick while running, making it far easier to look around, aim, and navigate tight shootouts or pursuits without awkward grip adjustments.
It remains unconfirmed whether the input functions as a toggle—where a single click keeps protagonists Jason or Lucia running until movement stops—or if it requires holding the stick down. Additionally, it is unclear whether Rockstar will include a legacy toggle in accessibility or control settings for players who prefer classic face-button mashing.
Rockstar Games has not published an official controller layout, so control schemes remain subject to adjustment prior to release.
