Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a fully operational public transit network spanning buses and rail lines, offering an organic alternative to carjacking while introducing tactical options during police pursuits.

Speaking in an interview with Edge magazine, Rockstar Games head of development Phil Hooker detailed how the studio built reliable, scheduled mass transit across the state of Leonida. Rather than relying on background scenery or static fast-travel points seen in earlier open-world entries, transit vehicles run on active routes that players can board and ride in real time.

Beyond basic urban traversal, the transit system directly connects to the game's revamped law enforcement logic. Players controlling Jason or Lucia can board a city bus to slip away from active police attention and shed their Wanted Level, provided pursuing officers do not witness the boarding.

"If they didn’t see you get on, and then you get out of the 'wanted' area, why would they search the bus unless they see you get onto it?" Hooker explained. "It’s ultimately a case of making sure that the systems of the game feel logical to the player."

Rockstar designed these operational schedules to expand roleplaying possibilities across the map. Players looking to maintain a low profile between major scores or navigate congested city centers can commute across districts without raising alarms or leaving a trail of stolen vehicles in their wake.
