Former Rockstar Tech Director Warns AI Piracy Could Accelerate GTA 6 PC Launch

Rapid advances in AI tools could pressure Rockstar into releasing GTA 6 on PC much faster to prevent unapproved community ports, according to a former tech director.

Grand Theft Auto 6 could see a significantly narrower gap between its console launch and its eventual PC release than previous entries, driven in part by the rapid progression of artificial intelligence tools.

Historically, Rockstar Games has staggered its PC rollouts well behind console debuts. Grand Theft Auto 5 arrived on PC nineteen months after launching on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while Red Dead Redemption 2 faced a year-long wait. However, former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij indicated in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun that the emergence of sophisticated generative tools may force the studio to shorten that window.

According to Vermeij, the studio risks losing sales if enthusiasts attempt to reverse-engineer or port the console code using machine learning before Rockstar can release an official build.

"I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC, which won’t be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales," Vermeij said. "So, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together."

Vermeij noted that while executing an unofficial translation using machine learning would likely demand tens of thousands of dollars in computing resources and API tokens, the sheer cultural demand surrounding Grand Theft Auto makes the scenario plausible. While server-side multiplayer components such as GTA Online remain protected against local reconstruction, single-player campaigns face greater exposure.

The prospect aligns with recent industry reporting, including a prior report suggesting a possible early 2027 PC target. Coupled with the sheer growth of the PC gaming market and record concurrent user counts on platforms like Steam, financial and technological realities may finally convince Rockstar to shrink its traditional release timeline.
