Veteran British pop singer Cliff Richard revealed he had no idea his classic 1976 single “Devil Woman” had been licensed for Grand Theft Auto 6, initially mistaking the record-breaking video game franchise for a television series.

The 86-year-old artist learned about the partnership from his nephew’s sons rather than through traditional industry channels. Speaking in an interview with The Times, Richard admitted he was entirely unfamiliar with Rockstar’s open-world crime series when the placement occurred.

“I was told this happened!” Richard explained, noting his relatives were surprised by his vocal style on the half-century-old rock track. When initially trying to understand the project, Richard questioned the medium entirely: “The show is a game show, isn’t it, really? One of the biggest on TV?”

“Devil Woman” was featured during the Netflix Extended Look trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 in August. Despite Richard's initial confusion over the nature of the project, the licensing deal delivered tangible commercial impact. Following the broadcast of the trailer, streaming numbers for the track surged massively on Spotify, introducing the 1970s hit to a generation of younger listeners.

Richard welcomed the cross-generational exposure that high-profile gaming trailers provide legacy artists. “People will no longer just say, ‘Oh, Cliff Richard is from the past,’” he remarked. “Because I am, but that past is what makes everything what it is today.”

Rockstar Games frequently relies on era-defining radio tracks alongside original compositions to establish the tone for its fictional worlds. Alongside licensed radio singles, the company has announced that the game's official score by electronic duo Justice is scheduled for release on December 11 on streaming services and physical formats.
